About Me

Gemma Ward

I’m a genealogist based between the railway town of Swindon and the beautiful scenery of the Cotswolds. I qualified through Pharos Tutors and the Society of Genealogists, and I’m an associate member, and the South West network co-ordinator for the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives.

I've traced my own ancestry in Yorkshire and Scotland, and love researching the history and stories of the places around me in north Wiltshire. I work at STEAM, the Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon, and I have a particular interest in the railway and the people who worked on it.

My research interests

I research families across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bath and north-east Somerset from around 1700, both online and in person at the local record offices.

I also trace Great Western Railway workers and their families anywhere along the line, especially in Swindon. Where records are sparse, I can describe your ancestor's job and likely working life.

“My mum is thrilled with all the information you collected about our family. She is enjoying knowing more about family members from the past: she’s so interested in the details you’ve found out about them.”
LR

“You have opened another ‘window' into my ancestor's past.”
RM

“Wow! You are an historical detective!”
